SAN MARCOS, Texas – Malcolm Regisford is an embodiment of the saying “A bend in the road is not the end of the road.” During his junior basketball season at Colgate University, he suffered an ankle injury that required him to have surgery. Throughout his healing period, he searched for ways to help him heal faster and more efficiently which led him to discovering holistic wellness.

He said holistic wellness helped him to heal not only his body but also his mind. Because of this discovery, Regisford founded Tapped In Wellness to share his perspective and creativity through videos and recipes.

“That [the injury] set me back and put me in a weird space mentally,” Regisford explained. “Plus, my injury wasn’t healing in the best way possible, so I started to search for alternative methods for healing. It started with meditation and mindfulness; then the food kind of followed after.”

Regisford’s approach to wellness doesn’t solely include the physical part. The former Division I athlete believes in holistic wellness, which focuses on the overall wellness of a person through three pillars: raising consciousness, plant-based eating and functional movement. This loosely translates to focusing on mental health and physical health through diet and exercise.

After graduating from Colgate University, Regisford noticed a peak in interest in his methods and was encouraged by his peers to share his findings.

“I just saw the appeal and the draw that plant-based eating and holistic wellness had amongst regular people,” Regisford said. “I thought it’d be a good idea to… show that in some way. I didn’t know how at the time.”

Regisford began Tapped In Wellness by creating videos of his practices, such as yoga and recipes, and sharing them on various social media platforms. He explained the background behind the creation of his first YouTube video.

“Ultimately, I was working at a production company right out of college, and there was a videographer guy there who was like: ‘You need to show people how you’re doing this.’ And, he’s like, ‘I’ll shoot this video for you if you make me a meal plan.’”

Since the beginning of his journey, Regisford’s platform has grown to have over 26,000 followers. While still adjusting to the side effects of life on social media, he says that one gratifying part about having this platform is seeing the community’s response.

“Big picture, the successes outweigh everything else,” Regisford said. “Just seeing the response, seeing how many actually take interest in this and find value in the content… seeing when somebody tags me in a dish I made, and they recreated it themselves, and they say how much my page has helped them transition… That’s all I could ever want.”

He added that he hopes to continue spreading his message of accepting new perspectives to as many people as possible.

“I hope to continue to be a figure in this space,” Regisford shared. “I just want to continue to spread the message and the vibes… to as many people as I can. So, just continue to grow the platform, continue to find new opportunities in media to expand and share the message.”

Regisford shared how, at the beginning of this journey, he wanted to make sure that he wasn’t being one-dimensional with his content because everyone finds their wellness journey differently. He said he feels that this approach helps grab as many people as possible.

“I understood early on that this is a holistic approach; it’s an all-encompassing experience,” Regisford said. “I wanted to be clear on sharing that as well… somebody may come for the food, but they see the fitness stuff, and they’re like, ‘Oh this is cool, I like this’... I was really intent on keeping those three pillars… I knew I wanted to build my page around that.”

Being a former athlete, Regisford says that the discipline instilled in him through sports has kept him consistent with his overall fitness.

“It was always something I knew I never wanted to compromise,” he said.

While Regisford has recently released a recipe e-book, he hopes to continue to grow his platform by one day having his own cooking show. On this show, he hopes to share various plant-based cuisine while also exploring various holistic wellness tips.
